Daily MelWear: Secret Lace

This outfit is inspired by a few bloggers.  Several of you yesterday wore light outfits with dark accessories, and I loved the contrast.  Also, Jenny from Closet 365 created a project for herself recently where she re-styled all of the dresses that she's worn to weddings in the past few years, in an attempt to get more use out of them and to prove that great dresses don't always need special occassions.

That reminded me of this dress, which I wore to my brother's wedding about five years ago.  Since then, I've worn it to church (I think...) and that's about it.  It just hangs in my closet.  I really like the floral print and think it's a great dress, although on its own I think it might be a little juvenile for me at this point.  At any rate, this cardigan is one of those that I bought at Ross over the weekend and I thought it'd be perfect to pair with the dress so that I can wear it to work!

I threw on the black belt and shoes and I was set to go.  And LOOK - look at the back of the cardigan.  Isn't that fantastic?! I love this cardigan. It's just so soft, lightweight and gorgeous with the lacey back.

Yay! I wonder if this dress would look okay in the winter with black tights and a black sweater. Hm.  Thoughts to ponder.

AND - it's Wednesday! In case you weren't aware. {Just call me Captain Obvious.} That's means Monday is long past and we're closer to the weekend!

How was everyone's Tuesday? Do you have any fun plans for tonight?

Today's outfit:

Dress: Ross

Cardigan: Ross

Belt: Kohl's (came with a shirt)

Shoes: Wal-Mart

Necklace: Wal-Mart

  2. You look awesome. You're getting more and more creative as the days pass! I'm inspired. :) Now if only I could get an outfit post up. My readers are going to quit on me this week because I'm sicky Mcsickerson!

  4. I like the subtlety of the floral with the white cardi.
I know what you mean about wondering if certain items we have in our closets are too juvenile. I just did a major clean out of things that I should no longer wear now that I'm closer to 40 than to 30! Ok, I kept a few... :)

  5. Super cute! I love the cardigan, and the dress could definitely work with black tights when the weather gets cooler.

  6. That cardigan is stunning! I love the lace! I love the soft, light colors with the black!

I think you definitely should try this look out in the fall/winter with tights and a heavier sweater!

  7. How pretty! The dark accents really emphasize how light and airy the outfit looks. I'm really needing this kind of inspiration right now because I'm getting pretty tired of summer. But then as soon as we're in the middle of winter I'll be tired of that too.

  9. I love this look. especially that cardigan. It helps the floaty dress become more casual. I don't think the way you styled it makes it look too young.

  10. I am a big fan of "weighing down" light colors with black accents. Great way to get more use out of a special occasion dress!

  11. What a wonderful dress. I'm so glad it's getting some love after sitting in the closet for a few years. It's great to pull clothes from the back of the closet -- it's like having a new dress without having to pay for it!

  14. Nice cardigan. I'm jealous because I can't outside-belt a cardigan most of the year; I just can't commit to a sweater because I live in Florida. So that means even most-winter long. ... In my efforts to stock a Florida wardrobe, this month I bought an all-season scarf and peep-toe boots to help me ease into Florida fall. I love fall fashions, like any fashionsta! Want 'em NOW! (At least most are in THAT boat.)

I could belt a lightweight, long-laying sweater vest I have, but then I must commit to no sweater over it for the harsh indoor AC. Le sigh! Poor sweater doesn't get worn enough.

BTW I came to your blog because I saw your icon and thought you had great, sophisticated style. I'm working on perfecting my own photo shoots; I find it really hard. I'll get there, and in the meantime I publish the could-be outtakes, haha.

  15. The whole outfit is very feminine yet chic. The contrast of the belt is definitely stylish. I love your cardigan and skirt very much.

I have gained so much inspirations since I joined the blogging community. I would never have thought of wearing my heavily ornamented blouse that I posted on my blog with a pair of jeans! Several bloggers have incredible and creative sense of fashion.

  16. Oh I just read that you live in Florida? I would die in a sweater outdoors! Ah well.

  17. Also, how can you stand to be outdoors for a second here? If I'm not wearing shades in a photo I'm either indoors or am so squinty I look like I'm about to sob. Of course, I have very sensitive, bad eyes. I wouldn't think much of this issue, but I just read this one blogger rank on others. She only likes to read blogs with people who "remember to" take off their shades and who don't post entries about expensive things they like. I was hurt! Sigh.

  18. I meant "how can you stand to be outdoors WITHOUT SUNGLASSES here". Sorry.

  19. Beautiful dress - you look stunning!

I think it would look great with tights and boots for the fall :)

  20. I'm wearing a very similar cardigan today, too! Watch for it on my blog next week sometime! I do love the extra little detail in the back.

  21. I really love a belted cardigan! I think it's so flattering and, and fresh and different. Perfect summer look :)

  22. Hmm I'll have to try that out! I have about 5 dressy dresses that I LOVE but I don't get invited to any weddings so they just sit there :( But you've really got me thinkin...

  23. Looks great! I love the idea of using fancy dresses for everyday. And that cardigan? Gorgeous!

  24. Mel, you are sooo cute!

Did I tell you I wanted to work with you in some collaboration?

  25. You guys are all so sweet! Thank you so much! I'm definitely going to try wearing it when it gets colder too. Thanks for the encouragement!

Ella, the only reason I'm able to wear cardigans is because the most time I spend outside in Florida is to and from my car. Otherwise I'm inside where it's way over-air conditioned and I use a space heater! The sun isn't all that bright when I take my pictures so no sunglasses needed. :) PS - I think if you want to take pictures with sunglasses on for YOUR blog, then so be it! It's your blog! It would bug me for someone to tell me that I should take photos differently just because that's how they want it. That's not really fair!

20 York Street, email me! My email is aworkingmomscloset {at} gmail {dot} com. I went to your blog to try to find some contact info so I could email you a response, but I didn't see one. I hope you see this response! :)
