I also need to invest in more summer scarves. While our dress code prohibits necklaces, it says nothing about scarves.
Who wants to teach me a million different ways to tie a scarf? Because this is pretty much the only way I know how. Although I've belted a scarf a couple times, worn one under a blazer, used one as a belt, and pinned & belted a scarf once, too.
Still...I need some new tricks.
Today's outfit:
Black Dress (as a skirt): RossPurple Blouse: Charlotte Russe
Scarf: Plato's Closet
White Snakeskin Belt: Dots
Sandals: Beall's
that maxi looks so good on you!
ReplyDeleteThe maxi works perfectly and scarves seem like the perfect way to get around the no necklaces rule!
ReplyDeleteI love how you creatively and stylishly get around the rules. Go Mel!
ReplyDeleteIt still blows my mind that you can't wear necklaces...who makes a rule like that??? LOL This is adorable, and love how you made the dress work as a skirt!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you...I think this maxi is classy enough for the office..there are many that would not be considered professional wear. I have that widget on my site....37 ways to tie a scarf! Also, on Eileen Fisher's commercial site..she has ways to tie scarves...all very helpful!!
ReplyDeleteYou are rocking this maxi! And I think with the dark, solid color, it DOES look professional -- especially since you've styled it with office-appropriate accessories.
ReplyDeleteAnd how odd that scarves are acceptable but necklaces aren't. Bring on the scarves, lady!
The way you styled the maxi is totally office appropriate. You look so cute and I love how you added the scarf.

It's a pretty good site. I have so many scarves and I was stuck in a rut on how to wear them. Hopefully it helps!
Oh, cute, cute, cute!! You made this maxi dress look perfect for work!
ReplyDeleteI love the look of the maxi dress in this outfit. Try YouTube for scarf styling. I found videos helpful. Have a good day!
ReplyDeleteI love that scarf super cute :)

I love the way you dressed up your skirt. I need to try this soon...
ReplyDeleteI don't get why you can't wear necklaces at work? That's odd... This is such a cute look and the shirt turning it into a maxi skirt definitely will make it look less casual! Hope you stay cool...we've got 98 degrees, humid in Chicago today :|
ReplyDeleteI'm loving the purple on you! You look beautiful today.
ReplyDeleteNo Guilt Fashion
Love the blouse over the dress...your maxi dress looks great on you!! If I could, I would also live in maxi skirts...its like wearing pajamas!!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the maxi look too, haha! Great minds think alike! I agree with what the other commentors said -- I think with it being a solid neutral color, the black maxi you're rocking looks office appropriate. But I can't help you with the scarf -- I don't know too many ways to rock them, either. But the methods you've used work really well!
ReplyDeleteI too have discovered maxi dresses, and I love them. When I wear mine, most people think I just came from a special event, so I think it would be totally appropriate. Especially the way you're wearing yours. Why are necklaces forbidden at the office?
ReplyDeleteMel - I think this maxi dress is TOTALLY office appropriate. (Although, I do understand how many of them worn as is can be far from office-ready.) The purple top and accenting scarf is a great touch. - Katy
ReplyDeleteVery cute outfit!
ReplyDeleteI'm curious about your dress code. What type of environment do you work in? Why are necklaces prohibited? I have an internship in a hospital office and meet with judges, hospital executives, clients and their families, social workers and physicians. I am curious about appropriate workwear for this position...which is unique and limited to only two other people. They dress business appropriate, but do wear jewelry. When I worked on the ambulance...dangling jewelry of any time and rings other than wedding rings were prohibited for safety purposes. What is the rationale for prohibiting in your work place?
You look beautiful in those colour Melissa! Check out Wendy's lookbook for 25 ways to wear a scarf!!!!
ReplyDeleteHey, at least it's within dresscode, yeah? I love the purple scarf. It takes the purple shirt to a whole new level. I think you should look into a goodwill trip. Scarves galore for 75p-1.29. Check out Sal and Audi for scarf ideas. They have so many!
ReplyDeleteSuper cute Outfit.

I like how you turned the maxidress into a shirt/skirt combo.
ReplyDeleteI may need to reconsider the whole maxidress trend. I only have one, but it's a crazy print so it's not that versatile. Perhaps I need to get a solid maxi so I can mix it up like you did here!!
Thanks you guys! You all make me smile.
ReplyDeleteLisa, I just posted a new page on the blog that explains more about my dress code. It's kind of nutty. I think the necklace thing is more because of the owning company being Seventh Day Adventist and they don't wear jewelry in their religion (outside of a wedding ring and maybe a watch). I'm pretty sure that doesn't have much to do with healthcare itself, especially for administrative positions that don't involve patient care.
I really don't think maxi dresses are casual at all ! It's still feminine and put together, and you look absolutely lovely in one ! And that purple shirt is amazing on you !
ReplyDeleteI love that you're finding more and more ways to make the dress code fit your style (and not just the other way around!)
ReplyDeleteVery beautiful post :D. Follow each other?
ReplyDeleteI'm following you :)

I don't think you look too casual at all. I think that all things casual can be updated and made to look a little less casual with the right accessories and things.I think you look great. As for scarf tips...I have none, sorry. :(
ReplyDeleteI love black and purple together, and the scarf is a great accent! I dont think its too casual at all, though the material of the top does make it a little bit dressier.
ReplyDeleteI think this dress is perfectly put together for an office environment...and that scarf is gorgeous!! Also, there are a ton of scarf tying tutorials out there, but I pulled one off of the Lands End website that I love, if that helps at all :)
