Daily MelWear: Momma Polkas at the Office

Okay so I don't really polka at the office. As a matter of fact, I don't polka {or do any other kind of dancing for that matter} at all. I took 10 years of dance lessons when I was younger, was even in the dance company for a year or two, but if you watch me try to dance now, you'd never know it. I have lost all sense of rhythm and it's mighty embarrassing.

Which is why you'll never watch me try to dance. Sorry. ('Cept I'm not sorry, really.)

Hey, guess what?! I'm only 11 friends away from 200 GCF followers! That blows my mind a little. 

You guys make me happy. :) 

What are your plans for this weekend? I know most of you are either in the States or Canada so you have Friday or Monday off. What kind of fun and shenanigans are happening?

I truly, honestly, wholeheartedly believe that I have the best readers in the world. Because you're not just readers, you're friends - and you've given me so much support and encouragement that just saying thank you doesn't seem to be enough. 

I'm going to say thank you anyway, and in the meantime I'll try to come up with a better way to express my gratitude. :) I so very much appreciate all of your comments yesterday. Yes, I'm in the middle of a rough patch at the moment with a lot of things, but I tried to make my post lighthearted in spite of all that. Thank you for recognizing that I needed some encouragement and for sending some to me. 

Now before I get all weepy...

This is what I wore for the board meeting. I don't know why I'm having such a difficult time coming up with board meeting attire lately. I feel like I should wear a standard skirt suit but I've worn them all already. My boss isn't big on prints in skirts, so I there are a few dresses that I can't wear and several skirts that I can't wear for board meetings. 

I do like this though. I think it's the jacket that pulls it all together! There's some subtle pattern mixing with the vertical pinstripes in the skirt and the horizontal stripes in the shirt. Those shoes are really fun too with the zipper detail on the toe bed. 

And...since our meeting ended up being around 3 hours, I didn't leave work until 9PM so I'm kind of exhausted and am going to bed.

Hi everyone! Happy Tuesday!

So, interesting thing here...I'm typing this on Monday night (okay that's more interesting to me as I'm typing, less interesting to you as you're reading). Usually I photograph my outfits before I leave for work and then post them first thing. However...with our work issues lately, I'm not sure I'll be able to continue that. Since my daughter is with her dad on Monday nights, I figured I would have some time to pre-post so I took my pictures of Monday's outfit.

Now, all that being said...I'm not sure how things are going to go here at A Working Mom's Closet. Things have gotten a little tense in some areas and things may need to be scaled back. I don't know if that means my posts will be sporadic, or if it means I may skip posting some weeks, or if it doesn't mean anything and I'll magically be able to do it all. I'm hoping for the latter. Because I like it here. It's like Cheers: everyone knows my name. :) {Tangent: did anyone ever actually watch that show? I feel like it was a little before my time but I've heard it was a great show and I'm kind of sad that I never got into it.} {Tangent Deux: speaking of great shows, I really miss Friends.  Like, a lot.}

The hardest part about writing this at home the night before is that I'm getting distracted by How I Met Your Mother. 

Wow, you'd think all I do is watch TV, huh. Not true, I promise. 

Anyway. So tonight (tomorrow night? I'm so not good at this pre-posting thing) is our board meeting. I'd love to show you what I'm wearing but that might be tomorrow's post. 

Okay, to recap: life is hard, I've hit a rough patch, I'm going to try to keep up here as much as possible (because it's really the only thing keeping me from getting too depressed about other life stuff) and I'm no good at pre-posting.

The Proper Professional feature was birthed out of my desire to spread the blogging love while also gaining some insight into professional and business attire in various situations. My goal is to feature bloggers from all different professions, whether stay-at-home moms, mega-corporation executive assistants, work-from-home employees, small office staff, business owners or more, to view different perspectives and opinions on what is appropriate, acceptable, and professional. Today we're learning more about what Peggy from She Hath Done What She Could thinks about dressing professionally!

Tell us a little about yourself and your blog.

I am Peggy, the author of She Hath Done What She Could.  I love the Lord, my husband and my 3 children. I am a Christian, a wife, mother, homeschooler, part-time employee, sports mom, Bible class teacher and preacher's wife. In 2010, I Googled something about Anthropologie and stumbled upon Anthroholic, and discovered Fashion Blogging! I was fascinated because I have always loved clothes, fashion, shopping and bargain hunting, and here, there was a whole community of women who felt the same way!  I posted my first OOTD photo on Jan. 27th, 2010 and the rest is history! While I would love to write more substantive things on the blog, for now, I am so busy raising and homeschooling my children that my OOTD posts are the most I have time for at this point. I love the community and friends I have found via the fashion blogging phenomenon!

How did you come up with your blog name?

When I first became a Christian, my brother gave me a wonderful book with this title written by Jane McWhorter. It gave lessons on the many things Christian women can do in service to the Lord. I loved that book because it taught me so much. In my life I try to do all I can for the Lord and my family.

Do you work from home or outside the home, and what do you do?

I work first as a mother, homeschool teacher and preacher's wife! I also work part-time, one day a week and doing vacation fill in for a commercial real estate company. I used to work with the owner of the company 19 years ago when I first came to CA, and years later, after my kids were not toddlers anymore, they looked me up and offered me part-time work. It has been a huge blessing. 

Do you have a dress code by which you need to abide (either corporate or self-imposed)? If so, what is it and how do your co-workers (if applicable) approach the dress code?

It's a pretty easy dress code- skirts to knee, no tank tops but sleeveless is ok, business professional, no casual days.

Do you choose your outfits in advance or in the morning, and how long does it take you to get ready in the mornings?

In advance for sure! I lay in bed looking at my closet, and outfits keep jumping out at me! I've done this ever since I was a little girl. I jump up out of bed and pair everything together for the next day. It takes me an hour to get ready in the morning.

If you were commissioned to rewrite the dress code, what would you change (if anything)?

No low cut blouses- this one gets abused and it's so unprofessional, not to mention immodest. In order to be taken seriously, you need to dress the part of a professional.

Do you think companies should take into account the potential cost for certain dress codes to be achieved and if so, should they be concerned about the cost being equal for both men and women?

That's a hard one. I think women can find clothes much cheaper than men. I think if you are required to wear a certain brand (like working for a retail store) then you should be given an allowance. If you are applying for a professional office job, I think it just goes along with the territory.

What is your definition of professional attire and would this vary if the business is a small business compared to a larger corporation?

To be a business professional you need to look neat, have your clothing ironed and shoes in good condition without scuffs and nicks. Don't overdue with excessive jewelry or too many mixed patterns. Work the basics, the solids, and a few prints with smart shoes. In short, my definition of professional business attire is clean, neat and put together!

What are some pieces that every woman should have available in their professional arsenal?

Blazer (Black, navy, khaki) 

Pencil skirt 

Crisp white oxford shirt 

Basic pumps in black and nude 

Complete suit (pants or skirt) 

Patterned tops (bold or small print) 

Cardigans 

Basic long necklace, chains, stud earrings, small hoops

What pieces are never professionally appropriate regardless of the situation?

Graphic tees, worn out shoes, stained or wrinkled clothing

Describe an outfit you'd wear in each of the following settings: 

1. A typical day at work. 

Navy trousers with a striped top and blazer, pumps

2. A formal business meeting. 

Suit with skirt, jacket and blouse, basic peep toe pumps

3. An informal meeting with co-workers. 

Cotton skirt, oxford shirt, wedges

4. A business dinner with co-workers and superiors.

Pencil skirt, bold printed top, heeled sandals

Are there any questions you wish I'd asked or is there anything else you'd like to mention regarding this topic?

You don't have to spend a lot to have a professional look. Every suit I have came from Ross but is a quality, brand name.  My suits bear the retail tag of $280, but I paid $50.  My core blazers were from Gap and Jcrew but purchased during extra percent of clearance time ($200 jackets for $20).  Both my black and khaki boyfriend blazers came from Target on markdown ($15) and are quality and have lasted years.  You can find items you need to build a professional wardrobe by frequenting stores like Ross, TJMaxx, Marshalls, Target and the sale racks at mall retailers like Gap, Jcrew and Banana Republic.  You can also change up a core outfit just by adding a scarf or statement necklace.  A professional wardrobe on a budget is not only possible, but can be fabulous!

Howdy, I’m M.J. Putnik. I’m happily married with two children, a sassy Cairn Terrier named “Alligator” (Ally for short), and two Beta fish. I’m a published children’s book author (Fish Wish by M.J. Putnik), screenwriter, lyricist, and currently working on a medieval fantasy trilogy for young adults. I’m a very busy whackadoodle. My blog name, Everyone Knows Me Here is tongue and cheek. I live in Palm Beach County. Come on now, South Beach! What a great place to hang out and people watch and gather some awesome character ideas for my blog or writing projects.  If you hung out with me at SheCon be careful…you may end up in one of my novels! {Editor's note: Now I'm a little nervous...}

*Who were your favorite speakers and why?

LOVED Guy Kawasaki (Key Note Speaker), Lela Davidson (Maximizing Your Twitter Presence), Maria De Los Angeles (Travel Writing)  Craig Agranoff, Yoli Ouiya, Shyema Azam, Anna Roth (Dining and Entertainment), Aliza Sherman (The Future of Social Media and the Web Apps)

*What do you think is the most important thing you learned from the SheCon presentations?

The importance of gadgets, planning, perseverance, and networking. Most important…the coffee vendors.  Must have coffee vendors! If it wasn’t for Baileys, and New England Coffee, I would have gone ballistic :) P.S. Clever Girls and their cupcakes hit the spot, too!

*What do you think is the most important thing you learned from the conference as a whole?

The value of networking and meeting incredible people with vision and a great outlook on life. That really motivated me to hop on board the Social Media bandwagon. I started blogging as a favor to a buddy…now I really am hooked. And thanks to SheCon and all the talented speakers, I have a vision for another blog…

*What were your favorite events/activities?

I really enjoyed game night with Calliope Games. My buddy from By Word of Mouth Musings (Oh, also from South Africa) kicked all our butts regarding American pop culture and stats! Hanging out with the posse and watching some incredible women karaoke to “Love Shack” brings a smile to my face, too. But my favorite time… the wine party hosted by the incredible girls of Wine Sisterhood. These women know how to woo. Free flowing wine, cheese and crackers,  hand massages, and a bunch of belly laughs to last me a lifetime. I really loved everything and everyone at SheCon.

*What advice would you give to someone who has never attended a conference and is considering one in the future?

Just do it! Go with a buddy and it won’t seem so overwhelming. Dress for comfort. Especially your shoes. {Editor's note: I echo that shoe thing. My thong sandals were FABULOUS but my heels, not so much.}

*Is there anything else you’d like to share about your SheCon experience?

Enjoy the moments while you are there. Don’t worry about what is going on at home, work, or your checking account . Let this be your time to escape and learn something new. I also want to say that I look forward to keeping in touch with all the amazing women and men I met while I was at SHECon. You all ROCK!  xxoo

Daily MelWear: White Out 3!

It seems that my version of the White Out challenge by Beck is more to just not wear black. Hm. Maybe I need more white items for summer.

This outfit is an example of what happens when you wear pieces that don't fit well. This skirt wrinkles a tad too much (and I don't own an iron), plus it doesn't sit correctly on me. This top (which, by the way, I thought was yellow but looks green to me today and I'm not really okay with that) does weird things at the neckline and poofs oddly.

So. In theory, in my head, I really liked this outfit. Executed with these particular pieces, not so much.

Eh, you win some, you lose some, right? The beauty of style is that I get to try again tomorrow.

Daily MelWear: White Out 2!

Well. Surprisingly I was able to get around to a few blogs yesterday. Here's hoping I can keep that up today! Thanks for all of the sweet encouragement, you guys!

Today's outfit is not at all what I'd planned to wear. I was going to wear this dress with the white blazer, but the drop waist wasn't working for me with the blazer and I felt like it was too short for this office. I know it doesn't look short in that post but trust me, it looked short today.

It's a good thing I changed (although I'm not sure this qualifies for a White Out without the blazer, and that's how I'll probably wear it since our AC ends up at 80 in the afternoon), because at the last minute my boss asked me to accompany her to teach a class to nursing students this morning. Oy! I'm much more comfortable in this outfit so I was okay being in front of the room. Until a roach almost fell on my head. At which point I remained calm anyway. Entirely unlike me.

A couple of weeks ago, I asked you all what your tips are for dressing professionally in the sweltering heat. Some of you had some great comments and I wanted to include them in today's post.

Victoria said, "My tip for dressing professionally in summer would be to invest in a very lightweight ivory blouse (like mine, obviously ;) ) and always carry a cardigan with you! Once the A/C is on full blast it gets cold!"

TiAnna said, " As far as dressing professionally in the summer, I'd say make sure you're not being too revealing at work just because it's hot. Also, peruse your employee handbook to see what you can and cannot wear, and take an example from your co-workers."

Heather from H & K  Style Journey said, "My main tip for dressing professionally in the summer is to wear a skirt with a cute short sleeve top. Grab a cardigan or a jacket for the office (A/C) and you're done. :)"

rlutz said, "My tip for dressing professionally this summer would be lots of blazers with skirts and dresses to stay cool!"

Beck said, "I don't really have tips on keeping cool, since I like the heat and our office A/C is usually on too cold for me. I guess one thing I could say is I use shawls and scarves as alternatives to cardigans and jackets over sundresses (they're also easy to pack and light to carry in a bag usually :) )"

Hi everyone!

I've got some stuff going on at work this week, so this is going to be short and sweet. I'm probably going to be real quiet on Twitter and may not be able to do much, if any, blog commenting either. I'm sorry friends, I'm going to try to keep up as best I can.

Beck is doing a White Out Week and while I don't have a ton of white clothes, I'm going to try to participate by wearing as much white as possible. I'm figuring gray is sort of a shade of white...right?

Daily MelWear: Weekend Attire

I don't normally post my weekend outfits but a few people have asked about them and I have some extra time today (my daughter is with her dad for Father's Day and my parents are out visiting my brother and his family) so I thought I'd go ahead and post some. So exciting, no?

There are no photos of today, because I slept in and haven't showered (and may not today. TMI? Sorry, but this is the ONE day I have to stay home and get things done!) and probably will not be wearing anything cute. Moving on...

Friday is my day off work because I work 10 hour days Monday - Thursday. My daughter knows Fridays as Mommy Day since we always have the day together. I love my Mommy Days!

I was originally going to wear this dress just by itself, but then it seemed like WAY too much pattern so I threw the cardigan on top even though it was almost 100 degrees outside. Pops of yellow in the belt and shoes are always fun with the blue and green pattern. Usually I wear something underneath too when this dress goes to work but since it was the weekend, I left that off. 

I spent the morning with my daughter, having pillow and tickle fights, and then I had a nail and hair appointment at 11AM. When I came home, we had lunch together before her nap. After her nap, we played, had dinner, then took a trip to Target so that she could pick out anything she wanted with the gift cards/money she was given for her birthday. She picked out the new Alice In Wonderland DVD with Johnny Depp (that's definitely my daughter!), a bath toy, a Toy Story car racing toy, a Rapunzel doll and some new black sandals that matched my yellow ones I was wearing.

On Saturday, we went to my cousin's daughter's dance recital in the morning and then to lunch with the whole family. After lunch was nap time, then I brought her to her dad's house so that he could spend Father's Day with her. He opened his Father's Day gift then instead of waiting so I could see him open it. I found Star Wars lightsaber chopsticks! One adult and one kid-sized pair. He was so excited and so was our daughter. Yay for good gifts! :)

I went back home, picked up my mom and headed to Wal-Mart and Bath & Body Works, then we went back for my dad and he took us to dinner.

That was my weekend! Now for a few other things to mention...

Daphne from Fashion Confessions of a Mommy tagged me in a What's In Your Bag post. My bag isn't all that exciting, but here's a photo (I have one of those purse organizer thingies because I'm a neat freak - there, I said it):

And here's what's in there (basically): hairbrush, medicine case with ibuprofen, dramamine and chewable pepto, gum, pens, business cards, sanitizer, lotion, make-up, thigh-highs in case my boss freaks about us not wearing hose, and two extra pairs of panties in case my girl has an accident. I usually have my wallet, keys and phone in there too but didn't take a picture of them.  I'm entirely unexciting, I know. Heh.

One other thing is that I was awarded the Lovely Blog Award by B. Inspired at Bravoe Runway. I know this has gone around several times (and I also really don't like leaving anyone out) so I'm not going to tag anyone else, but I'll quickly share seven things about myself.

1. I like to sing. A lot. I'm no star or anything but I do get paid to sing with an entertainment company during Christmastime. In fact, my ex-husband and I met at a restaurant where we both worked, where the waitstaff put on shows each night. I was a hostess, he was a chef. FUN times! :)

2. I have weird fears of elevators and water. I'm claustrophobic so I HATE elevators for fear that I'll get stuck in one, and I don't like natural bodies of water. I'm okay with pools, but lakes, oceans and other natural things freak me right out. And I also hate flying. The last time I flew was on a missions trip to Thailand back in 2005. Nothing happened on any of those flights, except that I had a panic attack for no good reason. Even though the flights were "okay", I'm still PETRIFIED of flying.

3. My favorite color is green.

4. If our daughter had been a boy, we would have named him Giovanni Michael. However, I'm SO GLAD we had a girl and that we had EXACTLY the girl we have. I adore her!

5. My two favorite jobs were working as a barista at Barnie's and as the administrative assistant in the music department at a huge local church.

6. I'm a little bit terrified of the day when I'll pay off my bills and be able to move out of my parents' house into my own place with my daughter. I've never been on my own and it scares me. Plus I'll have to learn to cook. Meh.

7. I could probably live on coffee, chocolate, and pizza. Not for long, cuz I'm sure eating that badly would kill me young, but I do love those things. :)

And that's it for my weekend post! I have the next 7 hours all to myself to get several loads of laundry done, more blog posts written, guest posts completed, organize my room a bit and who knows what else. Hopefully I can even get all of that done!

Curious about a new conference, was able to go with friends and be sponsored by Clever Girls Collective to represent them on a recruiting trip.

*Who were your favorite speakers and why?
Guy Kawasaki is just incredible. Murray I gave simple tips on keyword searching in video that were helpful (my goal for conferences in 2011 is to learn more about incorporating video into my every day blogging), Missy Ward, who packed a conference worth of tips into her 1-hour presentation and Danielle Liss' legal presentation.

*What do you think is the most important thing you learned from the SheCon presentations?
I learned so much about contract law from Danielle Liss. I had a lot of questions regarding reading (and signing) contracts before I went and it was a thrill to have so many of these questions answered.

*What do you think is the most important thing you learned from the conference as a whole?
I wouldn’t say I learned it at this conference, but it was definitely reaffirmed: time spent getting to know people, networking, is far more valuable for me than time sitting behind the computer.

*What were your favorite events/activities?
Cupcakes with the Clever Girls, of course! {Editor's note: ME TOO! And also the pizza they provided on Thursday night!} And video interviewing Dara Torres. THAT was a thrill. She's a beautiful, REAL woman. A role model in so many ways.

SO yum. So very, very yum!

Seriously, those were HUGE pizzas.

*What advice would you give to someone who has never attended a conference and is considering one in the future?

Bring business cards, an open mind and comfortable clothing (including a sweater for indoors) and make sure that you get out there and talk to everyone. (This next part is true in life, especially in life in blogging.) If you want to do something, if you have an idea, don’t be nervous or afraid of the consequences. Bring it up and share your idea. Otherwise, it will always sit inside you.

Daily MelWear: Casual Days What?

Thursdays are usually our casual/jeans days at work, but I'm not a jeans kind of girl (have you noticed?). When my boss {in her jeans and t-shirt} saw me when I walked in, she said "Oh you're all dressed up!" like it was a bad thing. Huh. Honestly I am just much more comfortable in this than I would be in jeans. Although I would probably prefer sandals but I need a new pedicure first. :)

Let me tell you about this skirt. This is the first time I've worn it as a skirt. It can double as a tube dress and that's how I've worn it the past couple of times (most recently to SheCon, the night we went to karaoke - you can see it in this post, it's the last photo!). This dress is SO comfortable and seeing how well it works as a skirt too, I'm smitten. I need more in every single color! Plus, the ruffled tiers!
