You know, they say that people with my coloring (dark features, fairly pale coloring) shouldn't wear yellow. I don't know who "they" are, but "they" write a lot of fashion and beauty rules that I just don't follow. Horizontal stripes make you look bigger? I wear 'em anyway. Short chicks can't wear long/maxi skirts? Eh, whatever. Wearing white on the bottom half isn't flattering? Well I like my white pants, thankyouverymuch.
A couple weeks ago I guest posted on Brittney's blog while she was vacationing and wrote about tips to stay cool during summer while still dressing appropriately for the office. If you didn't get a chance to read it, check it out!
Last year at this time I was all about the cardigan for work outfits. It seems this year I've moved on to blazers and one of my favorite summer office-wear tips is to find brightly colored short-sleeved blazers. That's why I'm so glad I found these cute little ensembles at Burlington a few weeks ago! Adorable skirts with perfectly bright blazers; I can remix the skirt AND the blazer with so many different things, for work or for play.
Last week's outfit was fun with the sandals and necklace, but today we have a corporate Town Hall meeting so I needed to wear closed-toe shoes and no jewelry. I was SO very tempted to pair this with a pink belt and pink flats, but then I figured I shouldn't push the envelope too much around all the executives. I'm trying to play it safe. Even this print is pushing it a bit with our strict dress code.
But they promised snacks. And that's enough for me.
By the way, what are some of YOUR favorite tips for dressing professionally in the summer?
Have a great day, my friends!
Today's outfit:
Skirt and Jacket: Burlington
Black Tank: Target
Black Belt: Can't remember
Black Pumps: Target
I love the black and yellow together!
ReplyDeleteMy tip for dressing professionally in summer would be to invest in a very lightweight ivory blouse (like mine, obviously ;) ) and always carry a cardigan with you! Once the A/C is on full blast it gets cold!
I have no tips! I'm out on property all the time during the summer and am a sweaty mess. I would love to read everyone else's tips!
ReplyDeletenice outfit, yellow and black is very nice! xoxo
ReplyDeleteThat skirt with the yellow blazer are amazing! I only have 2 short sleeve blazers, maybe I need some more? I haven't had much luck at our Burlington the last few times I've been in there.
ReplyDeleteMy main tip for dressing professionally in the summer is to wear a skirt with a cute short sleeve top. Grab a cardigan or a jacket for the office (A/C) and you're done. :)
You are too cute! I love the polka dots!
ReplyDeleteCute, cute, cute!! I love that little outfit. I'm so definitely checking out Burlington next time I'm around one!
ReplyDeleteUmm... Dressing professionally in the summer? I massively fail at that! This summer, I'm trying to do better (since it's my first summer of blogging and I'm trying to impress you peeps lol), so I'd have to skirts and dresses paired with a cardi will probably be go-to dress up look this summer.
Very, very cute outfit! I started wearing short sleeved jackets last summer to work and I really like them. Teaching summer school is more casual than "teacher" dress during the school year and that helps...I wear mostly sandals to teach in and that would not be acceptable for most professions.
ReplyDeleteI can definitely see that blazer with a cute pair of fitted dark wash jeans or even black slacks. I LOVE yellow! I never follow what "they" say either. As far as dressing professionally in the summer, I'd say make sure you're not being too revealing at work just because it's hot. Also, peruse your employee handbook to see what you can and cannot wear, and take an example from your co-workers.
ReplyDeleteI don't know who said that, but you look amazing in yellow. Very pretty bumble bee indeed.
ReplyDeleteI love wearing carpi in the summer time. very cute outfit.

i love this outfit!
ReplyDeleteI think "they" say a lot of things that don'e apply to the rest of us. Whatever!! I say wear what you want and what makes you feel comfortable and pretty.
ReplyDeleteI love this outfit. You know that. You totally need my yellow closed toes for this outfit!! But seriously - LOVE those blazers and skirt combos. You look super great today!!!
I wrote this on someone else's blog a while back but every time someone mentions some sort of fashion "rule" I picture a panel of old ladies with their glasses perched on the tip of their noses clucking their tongues and passing resolutions against things like white before memorial day and miniskirts after 35. :)
ReplyDeleteI think you look fantastic in yellow!
Jenn
I love how bright and cheery this outfit is. The colors are perfect.
ReplyDeleteGreat find.
I do not currently work but when I did I found it wasn't that different to dress for summer vs. any other season cause they cranked up the AC in the office so much. I actually found I had to have long sleeve jackets or cardi's cause I would get cold. If you lived in a city where you took public transportation though (i.e. NYC) you have to have layers so you can stand the heat in the tunnels and on the street.
Oh, about the camping question. We are members to the zoo/wild animal park and sea world etc.. so they send flyers and magazines with all the events that are going on. That is how I find out about them.
Daphne.

You look great! Polka dots make me happy! :o)
ReplyDeleteLoving this yellow jacket!! I think you'll be able to pair it with so many things this summer. And the little black belt is a perfect little addition to make it stand out. Lovely! - Katy
ReplyDeleteI think that pink flats would look cute, but I understand the need to follow the rules. My tip for dressing professionally this summer would be lots of blazers with skirts and dresses to stay cool!
ReplyDeleteIf you like yellow, wear yellow. It looks nice on you.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many things I love about that outfit! That skirt is gorgeous, the yellow looks fantastic on you. Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteyou look so sunny bright. : )
ReplyDeleteLove this...I have a very similar jacket!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun colors and combination! I love black and yellow together, even if my students do connect the dots and tell me I look like a bumblebee... :)
ReplyDeleteYou mean shorts and a tank top aren't a legitimate way to keep cool in the office during the summer?
ReplyDeleteActually, the air conditioning in my office is set so low that I generally have to wear more clothes this time of year than I do during the winter :)
AHH! I love the the way the buttons contrast and really tie it together with the skirt!
ReplyDeleteMelissa, thanks for the color ideas on blog, I will try some other combos with that top. It's funny I forgot I even had it until today.
ReplyDeleteI so love your bumblee look so cute and great for summer!
You look adorable as always, and I have to agree with you on those rules. I often get told my large forehead "requires" bangs, that cool colors like blue and green (my top two) are reserved for blue-eyed blonds, or that just because I'm thin, I must not have any curves. Let's raise a glass (or an espresso?) to breaking the rules!
ReplyDeleteSo adorable! I am in love with your skirt and that yellow blazer is just adorable.
ReplyDeleteLove your skirt! So pretty and fun!
ReplyDeleteStyle in the City
you look adorable!!!!
ReplyDeleteLove this outfit...the yellow looks great on you and the print and colors are fun but still not too much for a big meeting...it stinks that you have such a strict dress code!
ReplyDeleteI love it all!
ReplyDeleteOMG, didn't realize i missed this outfit. i was about to comment on the above one first and then i saw this one and was like, oooohhhhh. love the polka dots and black and yellow together is so lovely!

I bet you set the office "a-buzz" with your cute outfit :)
ReplyDeleteI don't really have tips on keeping cool, since I like the heat and our office A/C is usually on too cold for me.
I guess one thing I could say is I use shawls and scarves as alternatives to cardigans and jackets over sundresses (they're also easy to pack and light to carry in a bag usually :) )
Girl, we are SO friends! Anyone that loves polka dots and breaking fashion rules is a friend in my book. : )
ReplyDeleteHoly mother of God. This is the best outfit, ever. Yellow is my favorite color in the world and it looks horrendous on me. You, however? You can totally rock yellow!
ReplyDeleteDressing professionally in the summer? Hmm. Yoga pants and a tank top? ;)
Oh, I love this skirt. The print is right up my alley.
ReplyDeleteI have also been told I shouldn't wear yellow, but it's one of my favorite colors. It took my a long time to get over that hangup. But wearing yellow makes me feel cheerful and confident. And there is nothing that looks better than confidence! I think you look great in this outfit, and especially in your yellow blazer!
VERY cute jacket! i think its hard dressing professionaly in the summer because you dont want to be TOO casual. im getting great ideas and tips from the other comments people have left!
ReplyDeleteCute cute! I like you cartoon bumblebee ensemble!
ReplyDeleteWhatever to those saying dark hair/skin ladies shouldn't wear yellow. I've been wearing yellow my whole life and I think its one of my best colors. And it looks great on you too! Its a lovely contrast. I and love love love that skirt. Too cute!
