Friend Friday: Work vs. Blog Wear

Katy at ModlyChic asked for suggestions via Twitter and received a response from @redheaded with a suggestion to talk about combining office wear with personal style and blogging. Says Katy, "I think it's great, because after all how many times have you looked at a post and thought the blogger was adorable but probably wore the outfit only to take pictures and post to the blog?"

Without further ado...

1. When it comes to outfit posts on your own blog, be honest are they what you actually wore that day?
Absolutely, 90% YES! The only times I'm not wearing the outfit that I post (that other 10%) is when it's from the past, but I always point out when and where the outfit was worn in those cases. Either way, if I took a picture in it, I did actually wear it.

2. For a fashion blogger, working in a corporate environment can be tricky. How do you mesh your day job with your personal style choices?
It's sticky for me.  My corporation has some pretty severe guidelines, although thankfully my particular department is just slightly lax on some of them. I do wear brighter colors and more jewelry than is usually allowed. I try to make sure I'm either wearing a blazer, a cardigan, acceptable heels or a longer skirt to make my outfits more office-appropriate. My signature style includes lots of colors (I love finding unexpected color combinations) and belting practically EVERYTHING.

3. When you get dressed in the morning, do you think what should I wear to work or what should I wear for the blog?
This question makes me laugh. Because I totally think in terms of the blog more than anything else! Even on days when I know I won't have time to take pictures or blog, I still think about whether it's something I'd post for the world to see.  That's kind of sad.  I should get over that and dress more for me.

4. Do professionals you interact with ever make comments about your clothing choices?
Oh yeah, but nothing more than, "Oh, that's cute!" or "I wouldn't have thought to put those colors together." I tend to play it safe a lot (don't want to rock the boat too much, can't really afford to get fired) so there's not a lot of opportunity for people to question my choices. Usually. :)

5. Some bloggers openly admit to wearing outfits only for the blog post. What's your opinion on that?
It's their blog, they can do what they want. If they only want to wear their outfits for pictures, then so be it. Whether or not they actually wear their outfits out somewhere has zero affect on the inspiration that I may or may not glean from it. It's also their life; no one else should be able to dictate what they wear outside of their home. You know, except for like laws and stuff. :)

So there you have it! I'm sorry I'm not the most interesting person with fascinating answers. But I do my best. :)

Don't forget to check out Katy's blog and see what the other bloggers have to say on the subject, too!

Have a great Friday and an AWESOME weekend!

  1. It's always interesting reading your answers to these Qs. I also think about how my blog would look on my blog when I am getting dressed in the morning! Isn't that a bit odd? But like you said, it allows us to be more creative with our choices and I think we end up with better outfits - I think most of the people I deal with every day wouldn't care if I just wore a polo and jeans every day!

  3. Interesting questions. Some days I end up changing after the pictures and always feel bad, it was my 'intended' outfit but for whatever reason it did not work out!

  4. Thanks for sharing! its fun to learn more about what other bloggers do! I would answer these questions myself, but my answers are kinda complicated, but I guess everyone already figured that out. I guess we could say my outfits are usually more aspirational than I would like. I definitely agree that everyone should get dressed for themselves and not others (although I'm having great fun trying to decide if other bloggers will like my outfits!). Ack, sorry for the long comment!! Have a great day! :)

  5. I like reading your answers. I do not necessarily wear the outfit the same day but whatever I purchase represent my style. I used to buy everything I liked and ended up getting rid of those brand new clothes so I try to be much more practical and invest my money wisely.

  7. My answers to this Friend Friday topic are unexciting as well. I must say that I love seeing the way you layer dresses and skirts for work. You'll be my muse for when I go back to work.

  8. I actually thought you had an interesting take on those questions, bravo! For me, whatever you see on the blog is exactly what I wore to the office! Do I hear about it? Yes, absolutely!

I work in a very conservative environment but meh, they can't curb my freedom of expression!

    p.s. Fingers still crossed!

  11. That is interesting, and I actually enjoy blogs more when I know that the outfits they posted were actually what they wore out the door that day, for good or for ill. I'm the same way, with the exception that these days I'm posting collections of outfits from the previous week (or so) since I have less time to spend online. I'm not photographing every day, either.

Part of the reason I enjoy your blog is due to your exploration of color combinations. I'm a color addict myself, and a browse through your blog is sure to give me some fresh inspiration.

  12. Gah, I already ranted about this over on Grit and Glamour, so I'll try to keep it short and as sweet as possible given my thoughts. I really hate these types of questions. I blog as a creative outlet. If someone doesn't like it they don't have to follow or read. That's their perogative. I also work in a corporate environment with a stricter dress code. It's hard for me to get dressed in the morning and ignore what I WANT to wear and pay attention to what I HAVE to wear. On my blog is where I can always wear what I want. I don't think it should matter whether I wear it that day or at all. Who cares what I wear to the grocery store, fashion should be fanciful and creative. If I only wear it around the house that's fine. Some of my most creative outfits come from playing around for the blog. That said, I'd venture a guess that I wear about 75% of the outfits on my blog when they are shot. Other times I dress specifically for the sake of blogging, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that either.

I guess I should add a disclaimer that none of this anger is directed at you. It's just a question that I hear being thrown around a lot *out there* in blog land and it's really got me riled up!!

  14. I feel like I should clarify a little on the subject of wearing outfits just for the blog or actually wearing them out.

Everything I post I either way that day or I did wear on another day, if I'm late in posting it for a reason.

I like the blogs that show REAL styles that REAL people can actually wear - as opposed to outrageous things that would be neither comfortable nor functional in daily life. It's those blogs that I just don't follow because they don't inspire my choices.

That being said, if people post things that COULD be worn in daily life, I couldn't care less whether or not THEY actually wore the outfit outside of their blog.

And that's what I have to say about that. :)

  16. this is so great! thank you for sharing. i've been having the hardest time dressing for me, but also following work dress guidelines. i mean, they're used to my "style", but still...i can't really get as creative as i want to. i too, think about my blog when getting dressed, so i guess that's why it's been hard lately...i'm trying to be too cute at work and sometimes work is just...boring! haha! anyway, you always look so cute, my dear. keep it up!

  19. Thanks guys!

Paige, it's really hard to dress for work and still be yourself, isn't it? Ugh. Sometimes I wish we could just be US and leave it at that.

    Collette...stop rubbing it in. ;)
