Daily MelWear: All Mixed Up

I've always loved the black and brown combination on other bloggers, but I don't have enough brown in my closet to pull it out very often. Today felt like a simple day, after being a bit more formal with meetings the past two days, so I went with this black shirtdress and decided to throw on my cognac sandals and cognac snakeskin belt.

The mixed neutrals begged for mixed metals too, so I added this necklace that has both gold and silver.

You guys, I've been doing really well with the whole exercising and eating well thing, even allowing myself some cake for my mom's birthday last weekend, but I've just had the munchies the past couple of days! I need to drink more water and pop more gum, I think.

Do you have a calorie range you try to stay within each day? What do you do when you're hungry or have the munchies?

Today's outfit:
Black Shirtdress: Ross

Cognac Belt: Salvation Army
Cognac Sandals: Target
Necklace: Wal-Mart (I think...)

  1. I love the outfit, especially the necklace and the wedges. My trick is gum and diet soda if I want to snack. I have a tendency to snack at work so I try to count those calories so that I dont end up eating 7000 calories per day purely on snacks!!

  2. Hey! I try and keep it around 1200 calories a day. Plus I go to the gym 4 days a week. Although this week I've skipped every session! :( When I get the munchies I usually go for homemade popcorn - low in calories, high in fiber, and lots of volume so I get to eat a lot a not feel guilty! :)

I am attempting to eat better lately - I try to snack on fruit and yogurt when I get the munchies...

  4. This is probably my favorite look of yours!! You loo beautiful! And I really do like the bangs!!

I try to stay around 400-500 calories per meal... And I try to work out 4-5 times a week. However, since it's summer and I have a week and a half before school/life gets crazy again, I've been relaxing and eating juuuust about everything in sight ;)

  6. You look fabulous in this outfit! I love the mix of brown and black. This is probably one of my favorites from you so far, it's pretty awesome!

When I get the munchies I drink water and try to find something to distract myself. My worst time is 3:00 in the afternoon, I want to EAT!

  8. I agree with the others, that is a great dress on you, very slimming, and I love the brown shoes......I have 10lbs to lose, so i'n not gonna comment on food and exercise this summer :)

  9. Chocolate brown is my absolute favorite color! I had to consciously make myself stop wearing it so much. You look adorable. I try to stay between 1,500 to 1,700 calories/day. As far as curing the munchies, I try to have healthy snacks on hand. For instance, if you like sweets, make sure you have fruit and 100 calorie snack packs and energy/fiber bars on hand. If you like to crunch, make sure you have veggie chips, raw veggies, rice cakes, etc on hand. Just make sure you have the healthy alternative on hand basically.

  10. I love that shirt dress! Shirt dresses are the best, so flattering and professional! Your shoes are really cute!
I try to control what I eat but I don't really count calories. I keep veggie sticks on hand for munching, love those. I also treat myself to an iced blueberry coffee at D&D (with skim milk & splenda). It's yummy and the caffein curbs my appetite a little.

  11. oooh love those sandals Mel! I realized that I didn't buy ANY sandals this whole summer!!!! I'm kind of proud of myself but kind of depressed at the same time LOL!

I really like this outfit, I know it's very neutral and monochromatic for you but sometimes it's nice to change it up!

  12. Yay! I am so excited these days when bloggers go "basic".
I really should be paying more attention to my calories. Days when I try to eat healthily I have to eat constantly to hit 1250. Days when I throw caution to the wind and eat crap, I tend to be around 2300. My poor body just never knows what to expect! I have three types of "munchies". When I want something sweet, I'll eat an orange. When I want something salty, I'll go for celery (if I want something sweet and salty? peanut butter on celery... it was so good until I made myself switch to natural!!). If I can't decide if it's sweet or salty I want, I get water until I make up my mind.

  13. Excellent outfit. Simple, chic, elegant. Nicely done.
I do the new beverly hills diet. It's awesome. It makes your body a fat burning machine. I think it's an e-book now; not sure if your library will have it.Judy Mazel is the author. She's a big advocate for fruits and veggies. It's been a great diet for me.
    Lifetime maintenance plan is simple.
Eat protein with protein, carbs with carbs. Eat fruit in the morning and only in the morning. Wait one hour before eating anything else.
The book is long and the nitty gritty of the diet doesn't come until about page 120.. BUT each day you get a little boost of encouragement and little tidbits about how the enzymes and what not are working..

  14. I really like eating popcorn when I am munchy with lots of water. I feel full pretty quickly or I eat a little dark chocolate. The darker the better for me.

  15. I LOVE this color combo. I always forget about if for some reason but like you said, when I see others wear it I love it and want to do it myself. Maybe I will too :) Haha. We could be twins! But it looks great on you. So classy, classic and gorgeous! Love it with the jewelry too!

  17. I adore black and brown looks. Especially when it's a rich cognac or mahogany mix. This silhouette is great on you. I always find chewing gum when I'm hungry makes me hungrier. I suggest a handful of almonds, a mini popcorn or a ricecake (if you like them). I don't count calories, but I do know there are some days where I know I've overindulged but am still hungry. Sometimes you have to listen to your body and feed it something, but opt for something healthy like a small salad or kale chips.

  20. I love shirtdresses, and you make this one look so fabulous! Black and brown is a combo I struggle with myself but you nailed it in this outfit. I like your mixed metal necklace too!

  21. I love mixing black and brown...one of my favorite color combos lately! That dress is simple, but looks amazing on you!!
When I feel the need to snack, I have a 100 calorie pack of Almonds...if I did not have the packs, I might eat the whole jar!!

  22. Oh - and I've been going crazy with the munchies too! I snack on popcorn, yogurt, fruit pops, or lately its been the crunch bars I posted the recipe for the other day (I figured out each bar is under 100 cal!)

  23. *gasp* I can't believe you aren't wearing any color?!? Wait, the bracelet is yellow, so that counts. Pheww, that was a close one. ;) You do look adorable in this!!

Calorie range? It's been too long since I've counted calories. I need to get back at it. When I used to and wanted a snack, I'd chew gum, drink crystal light, and snack on carrot sticks or chopped up melon.

  24. LOVE the dress! (I'm a sucker for neutrals..especially gray and navy).

I don't follow calories, I just eat 5-6 smaller meals and snacks a day so I don't get into a coma after I eat a big meal :)

  32. So simple and sophisticated. I love black and brown together. Even though you're wearing dark colors, it still feels summer to me because of the ease. I don't count my calories, but do make sure to each balanced meals that include lots of veggies. I drink a lot of water, snack healthfully and never deny myself treats like candy and ice cream, if I feel like it.

  33. You have such an hourglass shape - it's not fair! If this is a mom thing, I'm definitely jealous.

  34. I love how your necklace ties everything together so well! This is a very chic look. I definitely have days where I just want to eat nothing but high-calorie baked goods, but usually my crippling guilt keeps me from going too far :)

  35. I think this subtle combo of black and brown looks great! Very posh. I try to only eat when I'm hungry. And also to not ever deprive myself of a craving, because then you binge.

  36. When I was younger I thought that all black and brown was a terrible combination. Now that I know more about life I relize that it is such a classy thing!
I've been trying to lose my sugar belly but even though I feel like I've been doing really well, I'm staying the same size. It's so frustrating and my rebellious mind thinks that if I'm trying hard and getting no where then why bother even trying?? Oh well today is a new day!

  37. You did a great job mixing black and brown today, so chic! When I get the munchies I try to eat sliced mango... it's tasty and healthy!

  38. Oooh, I love this! That shirt dress looks fabulous on you, and I love the mix of brown and black. I've been trying to decide if that's something I want to try, too, but I haven't made up my mind, yet.

This may have done it :)

  39. This dress is great for you and I like how you accessorized it. (: I used to try to be around 1500 a day when I was losing weight but now I just eat to feel satiated while keeping in mind that I need to pick nutritious choices.

  40. It took me forever to get on the black/brown bandwagon. But once I jumped on, I found it's pretty comfy up here. And since this looks so great on you I'm betting you're thinking its pretty comfy too. Yay for comfy wagons!
As for the food question, I keep around 1700 if I'm working out and around 1400 - 1500 if I'm not. At least I try for this. There's some pretty helpful calculators on glamour dot com that helped me figure out what I needed. I also drink enough water to sink the Titanic.
