Daily MelWear: The Revised Attire Proposal

Since I know you're all just on the edge of your seats waiting to hear what happened after yesterday's meeting with our boss... (heh)

The two other women and I sat down with our corporation's dress code and discussed the revisions we'd like to request specific only to our small private office. We did make the statement that for our bi-monthly board meetings as well as any other meetings with employees outside of our office, we would adhere to the corporate guidelines rather than our office's modified version.

I typed our requests into a formal proposal and we submitted them to her this morning. The requests included:
*prints and patterns on shirts, skirts and dresses
*shirt styles other than tailored (such as a scoop or v-neck, or sleeveless as long as a jacket or cardigan is available as needed)
*sandals and other open-toe shoes as long as closed-toe shoes are kept at our desk in case of visitors
*skirt and dress length to be just above the knee or longer (none of this calf length or longer stuff)
*jewelry permitted as long as it's removed for meetings or errands at the medical plaza
*on Thursdays when we're allowed to wear jeans, the option of wearing cropped dress pants or capri style dress pants

There were a few other little odds and ends things too but I don't want to bore you with everything.

While she didn't flip out, she did say she had concerns about the jewelry and the cropped/capri pants, but she would think about it over the weekend and let us know on Monday what she will and will not permit.

All in all, I think we did a pretty good job with our proposal. Now let's just see what happens on Monday.

Thank you guys for sticking with me through this! Your suggestions, advice and most of all your support is appreciated so much more than you know.

Hope you all have a great day!

Today's outfit:
White Skirt: Can't remember
Teal Blouse: From my aunt
Yellow Tank: Plato's Closet (worn backwards so the neckline would be high enough!)
White Cardigan: Target
Nude Snakeskin Heels: DSW

  1. Oh right, I forgot this was the 1800s and ankles were scandalous!! No cropped dress pants?
Hopefully she accepts at least most of the recommendations. I laughed so hard when I read you were wearing your tank backwards. See - you're finding the Mel way around the rules!!

  2. Wow - good for you - good luck! I need those heels now- sooo cute!

  3. Well, it sounds like if those were the only two things to "think about" you might be on the right track! We're not allowed to wear anything other than full-length pants at our business casual office which is strange since we can wear skirts above the knee (but just above - nothing too scandalous!)

  4. I am LOVING your bangs!!

  5. cara's comment. hilarious.

It sounds much more than just modest but downright too much. I mean I know church and there are things that are appropriate but if you are neat and tidy and all your bits are covered who cares if there is a pattern on your skirt. Are you a better person and work harder if there is no pattern? (rhetorical)

I live and work in a pretty progressive city and sometimes forget that there are restrictions like that at many places still. I loved my grandfather but he thought red polish was for easy girls. He didn't mind oh GREEN or blue but red yeah no red. so silly.

My husband went to Catholic highschool and my friends that went there got creative. Everyone had to wear a shirt with a collar but certain months in winter you could wear a sweater so the girls all made dickies.

  7. woohoo- way to stick it to the man (or in this case woman!) You look great- I love the bright colours and I think employees can look office appropriate, funky and trendy at the same time- keep us posted on the outcome!

  8. Sounds like a great proposal - I hope it works out. This outfit is so pretty and springy!

  9. Can't wait to hear what she says. I don't get the rigorous dress code, but I can at least kind of understand the length of skirts and modesty of shirts...but that jewelry one is always the most shocking to me! What is wrong with colored jewelry? And my Southern heritage is absolutely REBELLING at the idea that anyone would think pearls aren't dressy. Ugh!

  13. I adore this outfit! I seriously need those shoes, and I never realized I needed a white skirt so badly! I think your suggestions sound perfectly reasonable, even if you don't end up getting the entire list! (Heh, besides, it's always good to ask for more, that way your boss can strike some things off and you still win! :) ) Oh, and I really love the colors in this outfit too! :)

  14. I hope your boss is receptive to your suggestions and some modifications are made to your strict dress code!

In the meantime, you are looking completely fabulous as always :) I love the yellow, teal, and white together! Such a fresh color combination. And those nude pumps are so cute! I want I want!

  15. Melissa! I tried to comment on your post yesterday via my phone, but it wasn't happening. I wanted to tell you that if we lived in the same neighborhood, I would have been at your house that night to 1) commiserate with you, then 2) help you with a proposal, then 3) go through your wardrobe to make it work as best as possible! However, I'm glad to know that things are, at least, looking hopeful! Regardless of what happens, I expect to still see a daily blog from you, missy! ;)

  18. I hope they approve your proposal. It's not like you are asking to wear micro-minis, tube-tops, and a mouth grill :)
    Good luck!!!
    Love those shoes btw.

  19. I can't believe that you have to request permission to wear prints and patterns. Is this not an infringement of civil liberty?

    Hope you get a result!

  20. Sounds very reasonable to me. Hope it all gets accepted. Love your colors today. Very spring and that blue just pops out.

  33. Hopefully everything will work out - sounded completely resonable!

Just for kicks a woman I work with showed up yesterday wearing a Thundercats t-shirt and a Thundercats skullcap. UH. Friday is denim day not dress-like-a-6-year-old-boy day. WTF. She also wore pigtails on Thursday. She is 38 years old.

  34. Wow - your dress code sounds intense. The changes you proposed sound totally reasonable. Fingers crossed that you get approval - trying to stay stylish within a strict dress code is the worst.

  35. Good for you! I'm sure you presented it in the best way. I hope your boss with take your ideas into consideration!

  37. So does your current dress code make you a better worker than if you wore animal prints to work? Just asking. I totally understand modesty. I own lots of tanks for my low-cut tops. I wear slips with dresses/skirts. The shortest I go on skirts/dresses is to my knees. Just asking.
